Things to know about coronavirus disease

MARLBOROUGH- New cases of coronavirus disease appear everyday. Also know as COVID-19, the disease spread internationally, including here in Massachusetts. Marlborough Director of Public Health, John Garside, said the public has no reason to be worried, but should stay informed.

Very similar to the flu, COVID-19 attacks the respiratory system. Symptoms include a fever, coughing and shortness of breath. The disease can be deadly, especially to anyone with a weak immune system.

Garside urges Marlborough residents to prepare for the outbreak just as they would a heavy flu season. While there is currently no vaccine, there’s other ways residents can protect themselves. The number one way to stay healthy, washing your hands. With warm water and soap, scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Watch what you touch and keep your hands away from your face or eyes. Another important reminder, staying home whenever you’re sick. This protects not only yourself, but others around you.

Garside, along with Marlborough Public Health Nurse, Patricia Moran, plan ahead for public health emergencies similar to this one. Moran reminds residents who should wear masks in public and when. If you are healthy, there’s no need to wear one. However, those who are sick with flu-like symptoms, should wear masks to prevent infecting others.

In working to contain the outbreak, officials continue to gather new information. Any business or individual looking for guidance, can contact the Marlborough Board of Health. To stay up-to-date on the latest COVID-19 information, visit mass.gov/2019coronavirus.
