At a joint convention of the Marlborough City Council and the School Committee Monday evening, city leaders gathered to fill a vacant seat left by the death of Heidi Adler-Matthews, who passed away earlier this year. After an extensive nomination process and two rounds of voting, Christopher J. DeMeo, Jr. was elected to serve on the School Committee, earning 13 votes in the decisive ballot.
Mayor Christian Dumais called the meeting to order at 7 p.m., with both boards in attendance and WMCT-TV recording and streaming the proceedings. Following a review of procedural motions and the official reading of the City Clerk’s notice, nominations were opened for the position.
A total of eleven candidates were nominated. Each candidate was invited to deliver a two-minute statement outlining their qualifications and vision for Marlborough’s schools.
When it was his turn to speak, DeMeo emphasized his deep commitment to children and education, pledging to continue the “kid-centered” approach championed by former member Heidi Adler-Matthews. He highlighted more than 20 years of nonprofit leadership experience with organizations such as Junior Achievement and the Boys & Girls Club, where he helped secure over $1 million in funding for youth programming.
“I believe I will help accelerate progress with this group’s shared priorities,” DeMeo said. “For me, life is about finding and doing what is most important — being a direct, collaborative, and high-functioning team member in our city’s progress and well-being, especially that of our youngest members.”
After the candidates’ presentations, the council and committee conducted a roll call vote. DeMeo led the first round but fell short of the required majority, prompting a second ballot. In that round, he secured 13 votes, which was well above the eight needed for election.
Following the vote, DeMeo was immediately sworn in by City Clerk, Steven Kerrigan, taking the oath of office before the assembled members and attendees. A motion was then made and unanimously approved to make the decision unanimous.
Before adjourning, Mayor Dumais thanked all the nominees for stepping forward, acknowledging the value of their civic engagement. “We have a place for you,” the mayor said. “Please don’t lose that passion for getting involved.”
The meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m., with DeMeo set to attend his first official School Committee meeting next Tuesday.
